Star acre farms csa

What is a csa?

Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a sharing program in which people join a farm as members. In return for their membership fee at the beginning of the season, they receive a weekly share of the harvest throughout the growing season.

CSAs offer a wonderful way for farms to earn income early in the season, which is when most of the expenses occur, and to have guaranteed buyers for their produce so they can focus on growing it instead of marketing it.
This four-minute movie from the Food Network illustrates the concept beautifully and shows a typical weekly distribution to help you imagine how your veggie pickup might look every week.

OUR CSA program

Picture
Star Acre Farms is inclusive. You don't have to be a member to support the farm or attend any of our events!

However, we do have plenty of options for joining our farm as a patron or CSA member, which you can shop below or on our shop page. Our CSA members enjoy a weekly newsletter with recipes for using our farm-fresh veggies as well as invitations to potlucks and educational opportunities throughout the growing season.

Star Acre Farms accepts EBT/SNAP for all purchases, including CSAs, and participates in the Double Up program. When you use EBT/SNAP, we will double the amount of produce you pay for. If you have questions or are interested in participating in our CSA program using EBT/SNAP, please contact us.

what's in a share?

Many people ask us what a share will contain, how many pounds of produce they'll receive, or how many people it will feed. These are tough questions to answer since all of these factors vary depending on season, weather, crop production, your eating habits, and types of crops—spring greens will weigh much less than onions and potatoes in the fall!

A double share will easily feed a family of three or more when using vegetables for salads and sides. For a family of vegetarians, a double share may feed just one or two. To give you the best idea of what you are getting for your money, we have prepared a list of sample shares based on our last growing season.

our produce

We combine reliable, productive varieties with unique heirloom vegetables and herbs to give you a harvest that is diverse, beautiful, and delicious.

Much of our produce is of a specialty variety that you won't find at the supermarket. Our seeds come from Seed Savers Exchange, Johnny's Selected Seeds, and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.  Several of our selections are featured in the Slow Food Ark of Taste.

All your favorites will be back for the 2019 season!

GIFT CARDS

Picture
A gift card is a flexible option for those that wish to participate in a CSA without the weekly commitment.

Market bucks can be redeemed at any time and any location where Star Acre Farms sell vegetables. They may be used to purchase extra items that are not normally included in the vegetable shares such as fruit, mushrooms, plants, flowers, honey, and other locally-made goods. They also make for a great gift!

Starting at $50 - may not be used to purchase any type of CSA share, all applicable sales tax will be added at the time of purchase

working share

Picture
CSA members can pay a reduced rate for a veggie share at the beginning of the season in exchange for their help at the farm on a weekly basis.

This option is for those members who have experience in physical labor and farming, as chores can be quite strenuous and demanding. This share requires a weekly time commitment to the farm so that we can provide a hearty share to all CSA members.

We are also looking for other services to exchange for a veggie share; including marketing, accounting, and other useful skills that will help our farm grow in new ways!

If you're interested in a working share, please contact us with details on which skills you're interested in providing, time constraints, and a personal statement about your values as they pertain to farming and local food.
